South Africa sets new standards for responsible tourism

The folk at South Africa’s Department of Tourism have announced a firm commitment to responsible, sustainable tourism and voluntourism.

Their Department of Tourism announced the measures this week, called the Minimum Standard for Responsible Tourism. The Department will accredit companies according to the following criteria: respect for cultural and natural environments, avoiding over-consumption and waste, ensuring that local communities benefit from tourism and adhering to ethical business practices.

Certification will be available from mid 2012.
